Jan 28th

Hello there,

I’ve had a really good weekend. I have been really busy with a lot of things this weekend. I’ve gone to Dover and Canterbury then I checked out the National History Museum. That was lot of fun.

We had a long trip to take us to Dover this morning. I slept most of the way there after our group leader told us some stuff about the castle and the uses it was put during World War Two. We got the castle and we had to go right away to get to the tour we had scheduled for the tunnels in the side of the cliffs. The tunnels themselves are pretty cool. There was originally a castle on the site because of its strategic significance. The tunnels were added some years later to provide room for more troops when Napoleon was coming to power. The tunnels reached there current form during the times around the world wars to provide a base of operations. They added another couple of levels to provide more room for equipment of the day like medical supplies and fire control stuff. The coolest part of the tour was the info about operation Dynamo. This was the mass evacuation of troops trapped on the continent when the Germans overran France. This one admiral scaled the initial plan of 45,000 troops to 336,000. They commandeered every ship they could get their hands on and started ferrying people over from France. It was really quite an impressive feat. Churchill thought he did such a good job, that he choose him to plan D-Day. Overall, it was a pretty good time. We had about 45 minutes to go and explore the castle. It was a pretty cool place, but I just had time run up to the top to get pictures and then run back to the bus to got to Canterbury

Canterbury cathedral was interesting place. The only thing that I found really cool about it was the effigies along the walls and then the crypt. There was also a really cool room that held the colors of a ton of old regiments of the British Army. They all belonged to members of this particular family. That was pretty cool. This is also the place where a one Thomas Becket was murdered for resisting the King at the time who wanted to fill the church with bishops who were loyal to him. By a slip of the tongue, some his pages heard that he wanted Becket out of the way, so they murdered him in the church. Other than that, there wasn’t a whole of interest for me at least. I’ve seen a lot of these old gothic churches, so there wasn’t a whole lot new for me. I went to a pub for lunch with some of the people from the trip before we headed back. I didn’t do much when I got back, I was pretty chill. I went to bed early and that was it.

I got up and went for a run this morning and ended up racing a guy down the park. I saw him as I was making a turn and he followed me all the way to the other end of the park. I’m sure he didn’t just follow me because he looked like he was out training. When I saw that he was still behind me I picked up the pace and made him keep up with me. He eventually caught me when I turned to leave and he gave me a smile and wave. A good time. After that I went to the British Natural History Museum. That had a lot of cool stuff in, but a lot of the really good stuff was closed or it was just too busy to get into. The museum is really busy of the weekends. Since it’s a free museum, a lot of people go to check it out. I wanted to go and look at the dinosaur gallery, but it was way to packed. The Darwin exhibit was also closed for the next two years, the one gallery I really wanted to go see. Oh well. I’ll have to make another trip I guess. After I had walked through the place, I headed back to the flat. I was going to stay in that night, but almost everyone was going out to a piano bar, so I went with. It was a pretty cool place. It was just a small little bar in the basement of a building. They had a guy singing and another playing the piano. I stayed there for a couple hours and it was a pretty good time. The singer was good and he had a good mix of tunes. People started to leave to go out to other places and that’s when I headed home. I got back and watched the third Rambo movie, a great film I have to say.

I really haven’t done much today besides go for a run and write. I did get all the pictures I took last week on my computer and I got most of them up on that site. I tried talking to mom and dad, but the connection just wasn’t working tonight. The connection here is really bad at times, to the point where it doesn’t even work at all. They gave me a call on my cell phone so we were able to talk for a while. I’m going to watch some movies tonight then head to bed.

I hope you all have a really great week and I’ll talk to you soon.
