Peter:
Here is an interesting old man. He's maybe in his fifties or sixties and has absolutely lost his mind. He will generally be there when the pub opens and spends almost the whole day drinking. He'll put back six or seven pints and a bottle or so of wine over the course of the day. He's had some drinking practice is what I'm saying. Usually he's alright. He'll tell you random stories, facts or ask you weird questions. He can be quite abrasive though. Sometimes downright angry. From the fragments I've pieced together he lost his wife and daughter at some point and never really recovered. Always asks for a receipt and only buys things he has the exact change for.
Mark:
Mid fifties guy who is pretty nice. He's usually pretty good for a conversation if things are slow. He knows quite a bit, has been around for quite a while, and is an all around nice guy. From what I can tell he's on some sort of disability and so can just spend the day doing whatever he wants. He's worked odd jobs for most of his life doing some really interesting stuff. He's had some ad luck with his health and the British medical "system." I use the term loosely there. Mostly drinks lager but will mix in a bitter or cider every now and than.
Duncan:
Nice old guy in seventies who is slowly killing himself. He's got something wrong with his liver and shouldn't be drinking but he's still in the pub every day. He's generally pretty depressed and has been getting worse because it sounds like he got a pretty bad diagnosis a while back. Yet, the man keeps drinking. I guess he's just from a different age.
Stout Guys:
We've got quite a few of these guys but its two specific Scots that I'm thinking of. They will come in pretty early and spend most of the day drinking stout. I don't see them eat, granted they really don't need to with what they're eating. If both of them are there, they'll talk but otherwise they just sit there. Sometime they'll mix it up with one of the bitter regulars, but that's not as often.
Bitter Drinkers:
There are quite a few of these guys. They're all somewhat older and as a rule come in alone. They, like the stout guys, will just sit and watch the world around them. Don't drink as much but still drink quite a bit. There are two in particular that come to mind. One is a guy who comes in the morning after getting off work. He works for a few restaurants around here and does the repairs they need at night. He's a great guy. If he's in and its busy he'll pick up glasses for you. Really nice. The other is a guy named Reg. He comes in about an hour or so before closing and sits and reads the papers. No idea what he does but he apparently has a job. Always has the exact change ready to go, but always has you check it for him.
Alpine guys:
This is a great crew. They work at a radio station near hear and come in after work. Funny guys. Always in a good mood and always really great. They spend their time in the top bar and get along with pretty much everyone there.
There are a lot of other people that I would call regulars but come and go. They'll be around every day for awhile than I won't see them for a couple of weeks. I'm also getting to the point where I can tell what kind of drink a person is going to be ordering just by there looks. There are certain people you can tell are after a bitter, another kind after a stout, and the prats who want the lager. Its just a weird kind of ebb and flow.
